Energy Economist
We currently have an opportunity for an energy economist. The economist will provide advice,
analysis, and expertise on a broad range of issues including environmental policy, regulation and ratemaking,
market power, and forecasting. The economist will assist a team of experts in analyzing legislative and policy
proposals and government studies as well as evaluating modeling assumptions and results. Specifically,
the economist will:

Perform economic modeling using IMPLAN, REMI, and other models; |
 |
Analyze electric power systems to project prices; |
 |
Analyze market power and anti-trust issues in energy supply; |
 |
Evaluate cost-effectiveness of air emissions control technologies and policies; |
 |
Analyze utility cost allocation studies and rate designs; |
 |
Analyze policies to promote demand side management, energy efficiency, and renewables; |
 |
Review utility risk management and procurement; and |
 |
Analyze state level policies to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions. |
Qualifications
 |
Candidates should have exceptional quantitative
and analytical skills. |
 |
Masters degree or PhD in economics, business, or finance,
with an expertise in resource/environmental economics, cost/benefit analysis,
utility/regulatory economics, or industrial organization. |
 |
Advanced spreadsheet analysis abilities and familiarity
with relational database concepts. |
 |
Experience with statistical techniques for analysis
and forecasting. |
 |
Three or more years of experience preferred. |
 |
Computer programming skills and experience with data
extraction tools are a plus. |
 |
Commitment to environmental sustainability and consumer
protection. |
Salary
Dependant upon experience, and generally lower than private sector consulting
and higher than non-governmental public interest organizations.

Demand Side Management Expert
Synapse Energy Economics is a research and consulting firm specializing in energy,
economic, and environmental topics located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our main
clients include:

state agencies (consumer advocates, attorneys general, commissions); |
 |
environmental groups (e.g., Union of Concerned Scientists, MassPIRG, NRDC); and |
 |
federal government agencies (e.g., Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, etc.). |
Qualifications
We seek a candidate with expertise in energy efficiency and utility
demand-side management. The successful candidate would manage projects that include
the following:
 |
review and critique of utility energy efficiency plans; |
 |
research and development of energy efficiency regulatory policies; |
 |
assistance with the development of clean energy plans that include
comprehensive energy efficiency savings; |
 |
technical support in energy efficiency collaboratives and other stakeholder groups; |
 |
assistance in regulatory proceedings where energy efficiency is promoted as an
alternative to conventional power plants, and other similar projects that may arise. |
Ideally, the candidate would have at least 10 years of experience with energy
efficiency and a graduate degree in a related field. In particular, we are interested
in someone with the following skills:

familiarity with energy efficiency end-uses and measures; |
 |
familiarity with cost-benefit analyses of energy efficiency, including avoided costs; |
 |
familiarity with utility planning and integrated resource planning; |
 |
strong quantitative and analytical skills; and |
 |
strong project management, client liaison, and interpersonal skills. |
Salary
