How to Accelerate Renewable Energy Adoption through Transparent Data, Processes, and Regulation
Synapse collaborated with Electrify DC and Redwood Energy to assess how Pepco’s aging grid and limited transparency are hindering rooftop solar adoption in Washington, DC. Mandated by the DC Council, the study found that residents often face high interconnection costs, delays, and administrative hurdles, barriers that make it more difficult and expensive to go solar.
Using Pepco’s own data, Synapse advised Electrify DC's analysis of the utility’s “hosting capacity,” revealing that the existing public map overstates available capacity for new solar projects. The report recommends clearer data, faster interconnection processes, and incentives for home batteries and grid modernization to support a more resilient and equitable clean energy transition in the District.
