Massachusetts Solar and Storage Savings
Synapse conducted an hourly, New England-wide analysis to assess the benefits of projected solar and storage additions in Massachusetts. We performed regression analysis to estimate how electricity prices vary with electricity demand, gas prices, and RGGI prices. Using this relationship, we modeled the impact of new solar and storage projects installed between 2025 and 2030, accounting for other renewables expected to come online in that timeframe. We conducted the analysis for 24 weather years to capture uncertainty, and the hourly granularity allowed us to highlight winter impacts. We found that solar and storage additions will lower energy costs in Massachusetts by $313 million in 2030, with 44 percent of the avoided costs across New England occurring from November to March.
