Supporting Thermal Network Peak Reduction
HEETlabs
Project completed.
On behalf of HEETlabs, Synapse Energy Economics assessed the benefits of transitioning buildings from the gas system to thermal energy networks, rather than to air-source heat pumps, with a particular focus on reducing the system’s peak. The Synapse team analyzed four different scenarios to evaluate the performance of thermal networks under varying efficiency levels and weather conditions. Our analysis found that installing thermal energy networks could reduce winter peak demand by 25-62% and generate between $2 billion and $5.2 billion in benefits if implemented at scale.
