Technical Support for Decarbonizing Massachusetts’ Peak Electricity Demand
Synapse is providing technical modeling, analysis, and support to Clean Energy Group, other Massachusetts Clean Peak Coalition members, and tribal and community-based organizations involved in the Massachusetts Office of Energy Transitions Advisory Board's (ETAB) Decarbonizing the Peak Focus Area Working Group (DTP FAWG). The purpose of this project is to support community-based organizations by providing a roadmap for peaker plant retirement as well as technical research and analysis to enable these organizations to participate more fully in the process. The roadmap includes projections of statewide peak demand by 2050 and the quantity and cost of a suite of clean resources that could reliably meet this demand. The projections of 2050 Massachusetts peak demand account for additional peak demand from heating and transportation electrification, and are consistent with state policy. Synapse presented the methodology to the DTP FAWG in March. The modeling and analysis are in process.
