Tyler Comings is an economist with 20 years of experience in economic research and consulting, 15 of which have focused on the electric utility industry. He has provided expert testimony on topics such as resource planning, cost of capital, prudence of utility investments and economic impacts before utility commissions in Arizona, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Nova Scotia (Canada). He has also co-authored expert comments or reports in dockets in Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Utah. He is a Certified Rate of Return Analyst (CRRA) and member of the Society of Utility and Regulatory Financial Analysts (SURFA).

Tyler has provided expertise for many public-interest clients including attorneys general, consumer advocates, environmental groups, regulators, and state energy agencies. Prior to joining Synapse Energy Economics again in 2026, he was previously employed by Applied Economics Clinic (AEC) from 2017 through 2026 and Synapse from 2011 through 2017—where at both companies he provided expert testimony and reports on coal plant economics, resource planning, cost of capital, and utility finance. Prior to that, he performed research on consumer finance and behavioral economics at Ideas42 and conducted economic impact and benefit-cost analysis of energy and transportation investments at EDR Group (now EBP).

Tyler has a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Boston University and an M.A. in Economics from Tufts University.
