Technoeconomic Industrial Decarbonization Evaluator (TIDE)

Synapse’s Technoeconomic Industrial Decarbonization Evaluator (TIDE) evaluates thermal data from individual industrial facilities to assess where and how electrification can cost-effectively cut emissions. The model quantifies both the emissions reduction potential and life-cycle economics of technologies such as industrial heat pumps, thermal batteries, and other electric process heat options. TIDE supports state agencies, advocates, and industrial customers in designing programs, incentives, and strategies that turn a diverse and complex set of facilities into near-term decarbonization opportunities. This tool can be used to:

  • Calculate the cost-effectiveness of replacing fossil fuel process heat with electrification technologies at specific facilities, including detailed levelized cost of heating comparisons against like-for-like combustion equipment
  • Estimate emissions reduction potential, including net changes after accounting for added electric load and grid emissions, at the equipment, facility, sector, and portfolio level
  • Illustrate the impacts of industrial decarbonization programs or incentives by showing how policy levers shift economics and accelerate adoption
  • Evaluate how load shifting and alternative rate structures can affect the economics of industrial electrification
  • Identify industrial facilities located in environmental justice communities

The tool brings together datasets from the U.S. EPA, NREL, and EIA into a database with over 8,000 industrial facilities and then segments facility-level energy data by end use, fuel type, and temperature range. These key factors are used to model adoption of electrification technologies and their associated costs. Model outputs include hourly and annual estimates of electricity and gas consumption, which can be used as inputs to electric sector modeling tools. Using TIDE, Synapse works with clients to prioritize high-impact facilities, design industrial decarbonization programs, and evaluate policies that align economic, climate, and equity objectives.
